Where are all the butterflies?

Here in North Wales we have seen very few butterflies this summer.Only Cabbage Whites. We have a buddleia in full flower which normally would be full of butterflies .Not a single butterfly all day.
What is the butterfly situation where you live?

  1. We have had quite a few butterflies in the garden recently the usual whites plus a gorgeous peacock some little blue ones and some tortoishells,, I am not very knowledgeable about them so use a little book and binoculars to check them out. We have tried to choose insect attracting plants/flowers. Have also noticed some solitary bees using a special box that I bought from the RSPB.

  2. An awful lots of whites but not as many peacocks and red admirals. A very strange year. Maybe the very wet cold spring has upset them. B x

  3. I live in Georgia in the USA and I have not seen that many butterflies here either.
We have also had a very wet spring/early summer so still hoping for lots of butterflies. Wish the same for you.

  4. Here in the north of New Zealand we have had less cabbage whites and more Monarchs. Mind you, Doug collects the caterpillars and keeps them in a cage until first the Chrysalis then the butterfly appears. This is to keep them safe from wasps.

  5. We get butterflies during the winter months when temps are much milder. Current temperature in Kuwait is 41 C at 9:55 a.m.

  6. Our buddleia looks as if it is on the way out, dried and drooping even though it has been watered most days. We have loads of whites both large and small flitting around the garden I counted ten at one point plus a little brown one which doesn't stay still long enough to be able to identify it:)

  9. Sorry to hear you have a decline in butterflies! We have a lot of butterflies in south Devon. I don't know what make they are but they are mostly darker in colour. I have noticed that out in the fields there are few insects at all. I wonder if it's the crop spraying? Have a great weekend. x

  11. A few weeks ago I wasn't seeing many in the garden but since coming back from holiday I have seen a lot of Small and Large Whites, Gatekeepers, Large Skipper and a Comma. Our buddleias are only just coming into flower.

  12. The past few years, we're actually seeing a few more butterflies. I think people are trying harder not to use chemicals around us. Sorry for your lack of them this year.
