Happy New Year.

My wish for 2022 is return to something like normal.Just when we thought that was happening along comes Omicron.Things we had planned for January have already been cancelled.Let’s not dwell on that.

Looking back the biggest thing we did was move house, even move country.Would we have done that if it wasn’t for COVID.I think we were scared and wanted to be nearer family. So in April we moved from Wales into England to live very close to our daughter and family. That has been brilliant. We see our daughter and granddaughters on a regular basis. But we miss friends .What a strange two years.

Highlights of this year have been three of our grandchildren getting good results.Emily got 10 A* (but is struggling with being an enormous, very competitive 6th form college).Finlay got BBC and has secured a place at Nottingham Uni for September 2022 to do Psychology.Ella got a First from Manchester University in American Studies and was best in year.

My OH celebrated his 80th birthday earlier this month and we had a brilliant family weekend celebrating. All eleven of us.We have not done that for two years.

Xmas was spent here with Sarah and family. So much fun and laughter.Truly great memories created.

We have had our jabs(but unfortunately we are ten weeks past the booster and protection starts to fall).

We are just thankful we have remained healthy apart from COVID worries.

Two days ago we celebrated our 55th wedding anniversary.

Our son in law (had a brain tumour removed February 2020) latest scan showed the bit they couldn’t get at  hasn’t grown and the benign tumour they cannot get at has shrunk.

So, Happy New Year and fingers crossed it is a better one for everyone.

No celebrations here tonight. We were invited to Sarah’s but have declined. They are coming here tomorrow for Grandpa’s roast dinner. He has a reputation of doing the best roast potatoes and Yorkshire Puddings.

Today is our 55th wedding anniversary.

Not the best time to get married between Xmas and New Year.

We have a tradition of driving through Snowdonia(North Wales) and then going to Llandudno to eat lunch.

Last year we didn’t do it.Lockdown must have stopped it.The problem now is that now we have moved we are 40 minutes further away.C really wanted to do it so we did.The scenery is spectacular. It is only when you move away do you appreciate what was on our doorstep.Snowdon was barely discernible due to low cloud but only at the summit.

We ended up on the West Shore in Llandudno where we had lunch at The Lilly.

I am supposed to be on a low carbohydrate diet but broke the rules today!!!!Fried egg and bacon on Welsh Rarebit.I only had a few of the chips, honestly.
After lunch we drove over to the main promenade in Llandudno. It has remained unchanged for many, many years.Lord Mostyn owns the land and will not allow any new developments.
Not very good photos but it was wild and very windy.

On the way back in the car we were discussing how lucky we are to have been married for 55 years.Quite an achievement. We put this down to fairly good health and other things.Neither of us is selfish. We always consider the other one sometimes to such an extent that we can’t make a decision. We have been adventurous in the past so have great memories. We are also very active.C has his diary colour coded!Yellow Flintshire U3A(art appreciation and social history and the band he plays in.Orange for Northwich U3a (art appreciation, social history and archaeology).Pink for family as we are now only 5 minutes away from them and another colour for social events.

During the 55 years we have had “downs” as well. Our first baby was stillborn.Sarah developed Type 1 diabetes when she was only four years old.My brother’s wife died when she was 32 leaving him with a 9,6 and 4 year old.We survived.

55 YEARS.Amazing.I just hope we have many more.

C had arranged for flowers to be delivered today.

Happy Xmas

 Happy Xmas to everyone.

Thursday, 23 December 2021

Happy Christmas to everyone.

We were out the other day and saw this. What do you think about it?It brought a smile to my face but I sent it to a friend who thought it was horrendous.

A lot of Xmases are being spoilt by COVID.We are not mixing or shopping.I said to C this morning that when we were wrapping presents in the past I would say “save the receipt “in case they wanted to change it.No paper receipts this year, all done on line.

We are at our daughter’s Xmas Eve but we are providing the food.(only a five minute walk away).Christmas Day at Sarah’s.Boxing Day at S’s but we are providing the food again.

Our 16 year old granddaughter is having some mental health issues at the moment so I am not sure how things will go.

I may be glad when it is the 27th.

Anyone else had experience of this .Any help appreciated.

Have a lovely Xmas.COVID free I hope.

Please give me a thumbs up or something if you have read my post!!

I want to start blogging again but I need to know someone is reading it .

Catch up.My husbands 80th!

I havn’t put on a post for a while. I didn’t think I had much to say but a week ago Charles celebrated his 80th birthday.Matt and family came from Cambridge,Ella from Manchester. It was a wonderful weekend starting with present opening here in the morning plus me providing lunch for eleven.Dog walk in the afternoon. Then off to a local hostelry for a meal. It has a private room so I booked that.Wonderful food and company then back to Sarah’s for games.Could you believe paper cups, straws and ping pong balls could provide so much fun.

I just thought I would share something really happy with you.

Can’t believe I am married to an 80 year old.

Blogtober 16.Do you read crime fiction??

I don’t but my OH does.My nephew has written a book called “The Crime Fiction Tour of Britain “.Steve J Haywood.I understand it is free on Kindle this weekend.

C tells me it is really good and has given him loads of ideas for new authors to try.Stephen is now working on a similar book around Europe and would like some recommendations.

Blogtober 15.A walk by the river.

I have had a lovely day.Tea and a toasted tea cake with my best friend. She was away the last two Fridays and I missed our weekly chaI then put together a bag of goodies for Granddaughter Ruby who is self isolating this weekend. During the week she has been busy with school learning but is now faced with two days in her bedroom ,alone. She is a reader so that will pass some time.In the bag I put some party rings,a bit of chocolate,a book called “10 minute brain games for clever kids”,a diamond art card kit of a peacock( her surname) and. Xmas tree decorations kit.Not sure they will hit the mark but I have tried. We are going to have the biggest hug ever when she comes out of isolation on Tuesday.

This afternoon we drove for less than five minutes to have a walk by the River Weaver in glorious sunshine.

Blogtober 14 I have had my booster jab.Phew!

I had a text first thing to say would I like to go for my booster jab at 16.50.Absolutely!I had to queue for about ten minutes. The staff had been on duty from 8am and were not finishing until 6.30 pm.Volunteers were helping out.All in all a very slick operation.

This morning popped into town to buy something for Ruby to do this weekend. She is isolating in her room and during the week has been doing school work.Roll on next Tuesday when she is back in school and we can see each other.

What do you want for Xmas?Me? Lots of hugs from my family.

I am meeting my best friend tomorrow.I havn’t seen her for three weeks as she has been away so I am really looking forward to that.

Have you bought any Xmas presents or food for the festive season?

Blogtober 13th.

We went to Manchester today to take our granddaughter out for lunch. Also,to deliver a microwave we had bought her.For the last three years she has shared accommodation with other students but this year, doing a Masters, she decided to go it alone.I had doubts about this as she does have some mental health problems. She assuresus that’s it is working well.It is making her more sociable going out to meet people but at the same time she has her own space. Her flat is in a lovely area of Withington. We went out for lunch to The Didsbury. It was really ,really busy but the tables were well spaced so it felt quite safe. And I didn’t have to cook this evening.

I have begun to think about Xmas presents. My OH has a birthday two weeks before Xmas so it is a double whammy.Ideas welcome. He paints, loves blues music and reads a lot.

Back tomorrow.

Blogtober 12.A rant about M&S staff not wearing masks!!

We were in Cheshire Oaks M & S this afternoon.I think it is the next largest store outside London.I was shocked how few members of staff were wearing masks.Given that most of their customers at 3pm on a Tuesday afternoon are retired and possibly vulnerable. Not even the lady serving in the cafe.!When we got home I phoned the store and spoke to the manager who was on the defensive but I argued my points. An ethical company should be setting an example.I know it is not mandatory to wear a mask but they should be leading the way in being personally responsible.Rant over.

On a lighter note I was listening to Woman’s Hour and they said that knitting was a science because you have to decode.Who would have thought that.

Blogtober 11.Ruby has tested positive.

Our youngest granddaughter has tested positive on a Lateral Flow test this afternoon for COVID.She is having a PCR test in the morning. We havn’t seen her since last Friday so should be ok.Our daughter and husband are both vulnerable.Pleased to report that Sarah was fine in work today.

We should have been going to see my brother and wife in Poulton le Fylde tomorrow but as he is 82 we can’t risk it.Also, supposed to see our eldest grandchild in Manchester on Wednesday. We will Lateral Flow test tomorrow.

I have spent the afternoon with an old friend. So good to have a chat and I did some driving.C was practicing with the band he is in playing ukulele.

So we have the whole day tomorrow free.If we test negative a think a bit of retail therapy might happen.I am desperate for some new clothes. Two jumpers I bought from M&S last Autumn are not fit to be worn.Very poor quality these days.

Back tomorrow.

Blogtober 10

About ten days ago I said I had started reading a book called The Happy Family.I said it seemed promising. It was very disappointing and very predictable so don’t bother.

We bought a paper today. We don’t normally bother on a Sunday.I wish we hadn’t.Just so full of gloom and doom.

We are short of nurses. We have known this for a long time but done nothing about it.Why didn’t people think Brexit through. We are short of doctors. Why? Because we didn’t train our own because it was cheaper to buy in doctors trained overseas. And so it goes on……..

COVID has not gone away. All the schools round here (Cheshire) it is rife.

My daughter is going back to work tomorrow after being off with stress due to loads of things.I don’t think she is ready to go back.My 22 yr old granddaughter who is doing a Masters Degree is according to her Dad “very flat”.We are taking her out to lunch on Wednesday so will judge for ourselves.

Do any of you think there is more stress/ depression because of COVID.I am trying to be supportive but it is hard.

Blogtober 9th Collections

I can’t remember being a collector as a child. When we were first married we went to stay on the Isle of Arran in Scotland with C’s boss. She went there in a rented cottage every August for a month and we went to stay twice. While there she started us on keeping scrapbooks and also bought me a pottery owl. From there on I collected owls .Everyone bought me them.I have dozens, mostly now boxed up in the garage but I can’t get rid of them.I also like to collect Midwinter crockery. My favourite authors I like to have the whole collection..

My latest collection which has been going on for a few years is collecting postcards.I mainly collect Victorian and Edwardian ones, also comic ones,Raphael Tuck and Mabel Lucy Atwell.I buy them on eBay.I try and buy them with a postmark to date them accurately. It is fascinating searching for them and researching some history if I can.

Ah yes ,I have just started collecting Observer books.I only have six so far ,so early days.

Do you collect anything?See you tomorrow.

Blogtober 8th

I didn’t sleep too badly at all.Our best friends who have moved to Royston called on their home to see us and our new home. They loved it ,as do we.We were sad to see them leave as we have had a great few days with them. The house is slick and span so no cleaning for a few days.

For a number of weeks we have been getting up in a morning to a few slug/ snail trails. We have examined every nook and cranny but could find nothing. We tried salt, slug pellets ,leaving the light on all night to no avail. Then tonight C noticed a slug at least an inch long on the carpet.Where has it been hiding. It has been dispatched into the garden and let’s hope that is the last of snail trails.   ….unless it has friends.

Anyone else had experience of this.

The book I started on Monday seems to be getting predictable but maybe there is a twist.

Back tomorrow.

Blogtober 7

After a slow start we picked our daughter up to go to Leisure and Garden Centre. It is really different in that you walk around and there are lots of different stalls and displays. They also have a very nice coffee shop.I never ,normally, eat cakes, biscuits etc.I am more of a savoury fan.Packet of crisps etc.But today I could not resist a scone with jam and clotted cream.I cannot remember when I last had one.It was delicious,We saw a tree there that would really go in a good place in our garden but did not buy it.Instead ,we went to two other garden centres to see if they had similar.No.So we went back to this morning‘s visit and bought the tree, all with a petrol shortage.

I was so tired with the last couple of days and then today that I fell asleep at 6.30 pm and did not wake up until 8pm.I think a bad night is ahead.

Cheers

Blogtober.Oops.I missed a day.

I knew I could not keep it up.

Last night we went out for a meal with five friends.Originally there were eleven that went out for a meal together.C and D went down to Wiltshire ( from N.Wales) to be closer to family. Then C and B moved to Royston to be near their daughter.D has dementia and his wife has Parkinson’s.This just left five of us and then in April we moved from N Wales to Cheshire to be near our daughter.Has COVID made us all scared?

However, couple number two had to go back to a funeral of a mutual friends of ours. So,last evening we had a get together of  seven of the original eleven. It was just as though none of us had moved away.Great friendships last forever and it was as though we had met a week ago.Doug was a talented, clever, intellectual and practical man.So unassuming. He died from COVID despite being doubly vaccinated and no other health issues.

Our friends suggested a coffee at a garden centre after the funeral.B had a terrible cough and cold. They assured us he had tested negative. My OH is vulnerable. No spleen and R A.

RIP Doug.

A brighter blog from me tomorrow I promise.

4th October.

I have just started this book.I have lost my reading mojo recently so picked the above book.I needed a page turner and I have just read the first hundred pages and I am hooked.Hope the rest is promising.Any reading suggestions welcomed.
It has rained non stop today and cold too.I havn’t stepped foot outside.I have read the “I” newspaper, done the quick crossword and a few other puzzles but was defeated by the harder sudoku.
Good night on the TV tonight.Silent Witness at 9pm.We don’t watch much tv before then but record University Challenge,Mastermind and Only Connect.Over tea /supper we may watch the new edition of Eggheads.I love quiz programmes.I have done no housework whatsoever (shameful) but I have a very bad back.I really don’t know what to do about it.I couldn’t get a GP appointment.Should I see a physio?Maybe, but they will just tell me I am overweight and old and I know that.

Blogtober Oct 3rd

I decided I wanted to do some cross stitch so I rooted around and found this kit that I started some years ago and never got to finish. What are my chances of getting it finished for this Christmas.

We had a cuppa round at Sarah’s this morning with her,Emily and Ruby and her husband Mike.We were asked to stay for lunch but declined.Ruby has two friends with COVID and although she is testing negative and we could keep our distance with people door open we didn’t want to risk sitting closely at a table.

Blogtober 2021.

I am late joining this but will give it a go.

Today it has poured down all day.Non stop.

We normally have two papers on a Saturday but no Guardian today so just the “I”.

This afternoon went to  ……home and leisure.Interesting with lots of clothes, well lots of everything but my back is too bad to try anything on.I will be back!!!

Chinese takeaway for tea(does anyone else say “tea”) then Strictly Come Dancing later.

If it wasn’t COVID it is now petrol.

We are due to go to Cambridge next Friday to visit our son and family.Angus was 15 last Friday and we have only seen him once in 18 months. He has shot up and his voice has broken. We we’re really looking forward to spending the weekend with the family. The car is full of petrol but it will only get us there, not enough to come back.Do we risk it?

I have finished my Dune blanket(Attic 24).
This is my next project and my socks that are a WIP.

I am worrying at the moment about my daughter. She is feeling overwhelmed by what is going on in her life.Thank goodness we have moved closer because face to face chats are much better than on the phone.I am trying to help her pass the time with jigsaws ,a couple of small craft kits and a puzzle book.Fingers crossed it is short lived.

What a difference a week makes.

I was anxious at this time last week but it has been great.Last Friday morning our closest friends came for coffee, the first visit to our new house. It got their seal of approval. On Friday afternoon we visited ( with our old U3A group) a garden in Burton village on the Wirral. What a wonderful garden set over three acres with really unusual plants. There were 22 of us,some we know, some we didn’t.It was just brilliant talking to other people. No masks required as we were outdoors.

Monday morning we were back to U3A Social History. It was a talk on Airbus which is a great employer in North Wales and Chester. There were 60 plus at this meeting and many of our friends were there. How good to catch up with them after 18 months. In the afternoon C went to his Music Live group where he plays ukulele. They are practising for a gig at the end of the month.Again, a first for him for 18 months.I went to visit a friend who has got family problems.

Wednesday we went out to lunch with three friends. It was in a hotel where our daughter got married so quite nostalgic. So,all in all ,a good week and I coped fine.

Tomorrow a visit to Dunham Massey NT weather permitting.

Hope you are all coping.

Best wishes

Feeling nervous.

As September starts so are U3A groups getting going again albeit with strict rules.OH kicks off with a talk to the Art Appreciation group. His subject is Van Gogh. The Asylum Year. Not having mixed with people, apart from family, for 18 months it feels a little daunting particularly as we have moved house to a new area.We will still go back to our old U3A groups which will be a little easier but again I am nervous.I have been seeing a friend every Friday which has been a lifeline.

I am sure I shall be fine!Barbara

Garden mandalas.

Mandalas are so easy to make and I think they are effective. We only moved in here four months ago.The back garden is mainly hard landscaping with a beds with random shrubs and trees round the outside. We are left with plastic pretend hedging ,awful, and bare fences. We have put in new shrubs but for the time being need something to distract the eye.The top one is hanging as a mobile and the other two are on the fence.(Blogger is playing up and no idea where text and photos are going).

The next two photos are of a tree in the garden but look how far the nasturtium has grown.I never have much luck with them but this  one, just one, has appeared and gone mad.

Need to close now before it all disappears.

Cheers Barbara

What happened to the text with my photos??

The photos are of Helmingham Hall gardens. On the way back to our base in Diss we passed through a pretty village called Debenham.Have I heard Sue from Suffolk talk about this village?

Our last day in Norfolk.

Tuesday, 22 June 2021

We are in Norfolk for the week.

A few months ago we decided to book a week away and chose Norfolk because we could call in Cambridge on the way and see our son and family who we havnt seen for 18 months(except for the odd ten minutes in a pub car park). Our time in Cambridge was brilliant. We opened a bottle of wine we had bought Finlay when he was born with instructions to be opened on his 18th birthday which was in May.It was a bottle of Vouvray bought in Vouvray in the Loire Valley. It tasted really good and has survived three house moves so well done Matt. We are now in Norfolk.Yesterday we went to Aldeburgh but were underwhelmed. It didnt help it was raining and cold.Today we have been to Norwich. What a lovely city and so friendly.Volunteers giving out maps, locals seeing us studying the map asking could they help.We visited the cathedral, market ,arcade etc.I have got a really bad back at the moment and hadnt the energy or stamina to go to the shops. On the way back we explored Diss. What a lovely little place.Hopefully the weather is picking up tomorrow. It has been so cold. Hope fully will report back again tomorrow.

Friday, 4 June 2021

It has been a funny old week.

One day this week I got up and said to my OH "I love you very much but I need to talk with someone else" It is 5 weeks since we moved here to be near our daughter and family but because of the pandemic all means (eg u3a) of meeting new people has not happened. Today we went back to our old town,40 minutes away, and I met my best friend for tea and teacakes.I then met up with OH and we decided on some sea air so off we went to Prestatyn.
It was lovely seeing families on the beach, some even in the sea.It took us about an hour to get back here(still cant call it home)I now have a glass of chilled rose in my hand waiting for Tesco delivery pretty soon and also an Amazon parcel.David Hockneys latest book and a small rucksack for when we go to Norfolk in two weeks time,Fingers crossed. Stay safe Barbara

Noisy neighbours!Great!

W e have only been inthis house for four weeks and it has been so quiet. Our last house backed onto a main road and we would hear quarry lorries, tractors, cattle trucks etc rattling along. Here, all we can hear is a distant noise of traffic and bird song. Today it changed. Our neighbours at the back( we havnt met them) had visitors round. There has been alot of noise, laughter, music etc.Isn't that great. After all this time people getting together and having fun. Long may it last(well not every day!)

Has anyone heard from Mamas Mercantile?

She hasnt blogged for a while.Hope things are ok with her and perhaps she is just busy.

Saturday, 15 May 2021

I am loving our new home.

It is lovely to be so close to half our family.Sarah popped in this morning for a cup of tea.Mike came this afternoon and pressure washed our mainly, hard landscaped ,back garden. I have a feeling of comfort and safety in this house. We are close enough to help Sarah out but also knowif we need help she is round the corner.Of course, I miss where we lived before but in forty minutes we are back there.I am starting to relax after a year of uncertainty and today I feel energised.I hadn't realised how much the move had taken out of us but we are bouncing back, thank goodness. There is life after moving.Watch this space!!!

Thursday, 13 May 2021

I think the worst part of moving house......

telling everyone your change of address.I spent twenty minutes on hold to HMRC this afternoon. This was spent after a good half an hour trying to do it on line.It has been the same with buiding societies, utilities etc.You dont realise how many people you have to tell. The worst was DVLA who eventually decided I had lost my driving licence.No. But the best thing about moving is being close to family.Emily and Ruby came round after school yesterday and we have been round for tea tonight. It feels good knowing if we have any problems Sarah is just around the corner. The other bonus is that we love the new house. It is so quiet after our previous house which was by a main road.

Tuesday, 11 May 2021

Two weeks ago today we moved house.

We decided the removal company would pack all our books, pictures and the kitchen. What a nightmare.Just in the kitchen alone we had 24 boxes.6 layers of paper to wrap an egg cup.We ended up with 17 bin bags full of paper and at least forty boxes. We are very pleased with the house. The dining room is tiny and our dining table would have filled it so we have put that in the conservatory which is huge and made the dining room into a snug with a sofa and bookcases.A major problem we had was that the stairs have a turn at the bottom and they couldn't get the wardrobes upstairs.Fortunately there were fitted wardrobes in two of the bedrooms so we are using them but the hanging rails are soooo high.I am 5'5 in and am struggling to reach them., It is lovely being so close to Sarah and her family. Her OH is still not driving followinghis brain tumour op so we able to help out.C picked Ruby up from Guides last night. Both Ruby and Emily have popped in after school and M and S have been round for cups of tea.It is great being close to family as we are getting older but we are so tired.Yesterday I started the nightmare of informing people of our new address building societies, driving licence etc .The number of times I was told " Due to Covid.....and then played me music for what seemed like forever.Very frustrating So, hopefully, I am back in Blogland and as my energy levels start to rise hope to be back on here more. I have been reading everyones blogs and was so sad to read about Teresa in Oregon.

What a relief to be able to drive anywhere in Wales.

From last Saturday restrictions were lifted and we can now drive anywhere in Wales but not go across the border into England. This means we can't drive to Chester,in England, ten miles away but we could drive to Cardiff which is 200miles away. We decided a trip to the coast would be a good idea, about forty minutes away.We thought it would be busy but it wasn't.We went to Abergele and walked on the prom inhaling fresh sea air.Everyone was social distancing and most were wearing masks. It felt very safe.It lifted our spirits so much. Onwards and upwards,we hope.

Thursday, 18 March 2021

I am so excited!

I am having my hair cut etc at the hairdressers tomorrow. Here in Wales this is now allowed. My hair is very thick and the longer it grows the longer it takes me to dry it.We are also now allowed to get in the carand go out.We are supposed to only go five miles but that gives us the opportunity to get into the countryside and have a stroll.Having been in lockdown since December 20 th this feels like freedom. We are still being very careful not going into shops but having groceries delivered. How are doing?

Catch up.

It has beenquite a pleasant day here in North Wales. We managed a walk this afternoon and I spotted these fungi.I looked them up when we got back and,I think, they are scarlet elf cup fungi and are quite scarce. We are only supposed to walk from home but as we live near the town centre there are are always lots of people around so we choose to drive a little way and do a walk, level,on a nature reserve.Very pleasant.
I have finished my granny square blanket just using oddments from my stash.I quite enjoyed doing it and it will go to a charity when they re open.No full balls were used just bits from my stash.

Saturday, 30 January 2021

What I have been doing in lockdown.

I have just finished a pair of socks .I have no more sock wool so decided to buy some more as C said he could do with some new ones.I usually use Wool Warehouse who are brilliant but all I kept getting was "out of stock" over and over again.I wanted some red Aran wool.Again "out of stock".I tried other suppliers and got the same.I eventually found a limited supply at Laughing Hens.My initial thought was that in lockdown everyone was knitting socks! Then when it arrived today I found out it is made in Germany. So, is it a Brexit supply problem? And I still havnt found any red aran!
I have also been using up my stash crocheting granny squares.I have done more than sixty.Nowthe job of joining them together. This is the second blanket I have done during lockdown and they will go to a homeless/ refugee charity. Thankfully I suffered no reaction to my covid jab. We have had quite a bit of snow recently so I cant get out for a walk.I am just getting bigger and stiffer as the days go by. Roll on an end to all this.
